If you are costing a dental practice app, the honest answer is a range, and the range is wide. The dental practice app cost in Australia in 2026 lands mostly between $25,000 and $250,000 to build, with a smaller number of group-practice platforms going beyond that. That spread is not vagueness. It reflects four or five decisions that each move the number, and a handful of things people assume matter but do not.

The figures below are typical Australian agency ranges based on blended rates of roughly $120 to $200 an hour. Treat them as planning ranges, not a quote. Your practice management system and your compliance position can shift them in either direction.

Dental practice app cost: the three realistic tiers

TierTypical rangeWhat you get
1. Booking, reminders and recall$25,000 to $60,000Online booking, push reminders, next-appointment view
2. Integrated patient app$60,000 to $120,000Two-way practice system sync, digital forms, payments, recall engine
3. Full patient portal$120,000 to $250,000+Treatment plans, imaging sharing, health fund claiming, multi-location, admin console

Tier 1: Booking, reminders and recall ($25,000 to $60,000)

This is the app most single-chair and small multi-chair practices actually need. Patients book, reschedule and cancel, receive push reminders, tap to call or get directions, and see their next appointment.

It is usually built cross-platform (Flutter or React Native) so one codebase covers iOS and Android. The cost stays low only if the app does not need to write back to your practice management system. If bookings live in a separate database, someone has to reconcile them manually, and that cost shows up in reception time instead of the build budget.

Tier 2: Integrated patient app ($60,000 to $120,000)

This tier adds a two-way connection to your practice management software, digital new-patient and medical history forms, card-on-file payments and deposits, and a recall engine that fills cancelled slots.

The integration is the expensive part. It is not the screens.

Tier 3: Full patient portal ($120,000 to $250,000+)

Treatment plans with accept-and-pay, imaging and document sharing, health fund claiming at the point of service, family accounts, multi-location support, and a staff-facing admin console. This is a product, not a project, and it needs a product owner on your side.

What moves dental practice app cost

1. Practice management integration

This is the single biggest swing factor. Dental practice systems differ enormously in what they expose. Some offer a documented API, some offer a partner programme with fees and approval lead times, and some offer neither, which leaves you with a middleware vendor or a database-level workaround.

Budget a discovery spike before you commit to a fixed price. A two-week technical spike that proves you can read and write appointments typically costs $4,000 to $10,000 and removes the largest unknown in the quote.

2. Health data handling and privacy

Patient data is health information under the Privacy Act 1988, so the Australian Privacy Principles apply. In practice this means encryption in transit and at rest, Australian data residency where your obligations or your patients expect it, audit logging, access controls for staff roles, and a notifiable data breach process. Security architecture, audit logging and a penetration test are their own line of work with their own hours — ask for them as a separate line on the quote rather than as part of the build, so you can see what you are paying for and what you would be dropping if you cut it.

3. Payments and health funds

Card payments through Stripe or a similar provider are routine. Real-time health fund claiming is not. It runs through an integration with a provider such as Tyro Health Point, and it depends on your existing terminals and merchant setup. Price it as its own line.

4. Platform scope

Cross-platform saves money on most dental apps. Native Swift and Kotlin only earn their place if you need deep device features, such as on-device imaging capture or heavy offline use. Choosing native for its own sake can add 40 to 70 per cent to the build.

5. Design and content

A branded, accessible design system is worth paying for. Anxious patients and older patients are a large part of your audience, so contrast, tap target size and plain language matter. Budget $6,000 to $20,000 for design, depending on how much research and prototyping you want.

What does not move it much

  • Number of screens. Twelve screens or twenty rarely changes the price as much as one integration does.
  • The logo and colour scheme. Cosmetic changes are cheap. Behavioural changes are not.
  • Whether you are in the Hills District, Parramatta or the CBD. Location barely affects price. Team seniority and experience with regulated data do.
  • Push notifications. They are a small line item. The recall logic behind them is where the effort goes.

The costs that arrive after launch

A build quote that stops at the app store is incomplete. Plan for roughly 15 to 20 per cent of the build cost per year for maintenance. That covers OS updates (a new iOS release breaks something most years), dependency patches, hosting, monitoring, and support. App store fees are small by comparison: Apple publishes the Developer Program fee as 99 USD a year, listed in local currency during enrolment, and Google Play charges a one-off 25 USD registration fee per account. If you are costing one out, this walks through what building an app actually involves.

What a dental app quote should itemise

A single number on a page is a warning sign. A quote you can compare should break out at least the following.
